Emily discuss her contract with the AFL, her recent loss to Erin Toughill and more.
Name: Emily Thompson Nickname: Timebomb Fight weight: 145 Fight out of: Nor Cal Fighting Alliance Q: It was nice to meet you at Fatal Femmes Fighting back in April 2008! Since then you had only one fight which was your most recent. I’m curious was there any reason to the pause in fights in between? A: A few months after that fight I signed a 3 fight contract with AFL. We were very excited to be a part of a great new organization but unfortunately the AFL didn't produce. They made many promises they were unable to keep and I think they tried to get too big too fast. Q: Your most recent fight against Erin Toughill at PFC 13 posed a great challenge and you lost by unanimous decision. Do you see a rematch in the future? A: I am very open to a rematch. Seems like there are very few females at our weight so its something that definitely seems possible. And if there were to be a rematch I think to have it in a cage would make it a little more interesting. Q: Can you walk me through the fight? A: She executed her game plan and I was unable to execute mine. She kept me away with her longer reach and defended the take down well. Q: In 2008 you had a lot of headway when getting signed with the AFL. Are you still a part of this organization? A: I was very excited to be a part of this great new organization but like I said, I think they tried to grow too fast and fell flat. Q: I read once in an article that you had not even planned on becoming a fighter that it had just happened on a whim. I was excited when I found out that your first fight you went into was without any formal training! With that being said, congratulations on coming in 9th on the WAMMA Rankings for Featherweight released on May 2nd. This is an exciting achievement for you. How long have you been training/fighting since that first initial match to bring you so far? A: I’ve been training full time now for the last 3 years at Nor Cal Fighting Alliance with Dave Terrell. Before that it was hard to train, go to school, and be a collegiate athlete. But before training at Nor Cal I would train in Alaska during my breaks from school during Christmas and over the summers. Q: I was very intrigued to find out that you’re a successful woman inside and outside of the ring. You currently hold a communications degree and while through school played soccer all four years. What flipped the switch after college to start training full time? A: It just seemed like the natural thing to do. I’m a very competitive person and love to challenge myself so I just figured, what the hell, lets try this out for a while. Q: Who are some of your biggest influences when it comes to fighting? A: I find myself to be influenced by all kinds of people, not only other fighters or coaches. My brother is one person who really inspires me to be a better fighter as well as all of my teammates in the gym who push me on a regular basis. Q: Currently, what does a typical day look like for you? Do you train full time or do you have other responsibilities outside of the gym? A: I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by some very supportive and understanding people. I do have a part time job where I’m able to work my schedule around my training not the other way around. But a typical day for me is training two times a day for at least two hours each session and a little work here and there in between. Q: What’s next for you? I’m in the process of trying to get another fight asap. I am uninjured from my last and am still in good shape so I’m looking to get right back in it! |
