Wednesday, November 04 2009 Roxanne Modafferi (top) will face Marloes Coenen at the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers event
TOO MUCH INFORMATION
As mentioned last week, Erin Toughill (10-2-1) pulled out of her scheduled bout with Marloes Coenen (16-3) for medical reasons. Following a slew of rumors that she simply couldn't make weight, Toughill told America that the problem was really ruptured ovarian cysts, something that none of us at the Savage Science really want to talk about. Luckily, MMA Weekly did the dirty work for us.
ROXY VERSUS MARLOES
Strikeforce awesomeness abounds as they decided not to cancel the fight completely but to simply find a replacement fighter at the last minute. Roxanne Modafferi (13-4) will be taking on Marloes Coenen (16-3) instead. Modafferi fought Coenen at K-Grace 1 in 2007 and won by split decision. Although Roxy normally fights at the lower weight class of 135 lbs., it has been almost a year since she's been in the cage and I'm sure she's excited just to get a fight--especially such a high profile one. According to an interview with the Fight Nerd, Roxanne's plan is to punch Marloes in the face, and try out her new special move "su-pa-tobi-hiza-bakku-fisuto." Whether or not the fight will be aired remains to be seen.
MORE FIGHTS OFF
Other cancelled fights this week include Jessica Aguilar (5-3)'s South Florida Cage Wars bout versus April Coutino (2-0). The fight was lamely canceled a mere three days before the event due to low ticket sales.
Michelle Vera (1-0) also had her fight against Angela Hayes (1-5) cancelled. According to Vera's facebook page, this is because Hayes backed out.
FIGHT RESULTS
Paulina "Pika" Suska (1-1-1) and Eva Liskova (0-1-1) fought to a draw at NNB: Nitrianska Noc Bojovnikov.
Jan Finney (6-7) defeated Brighton Hutton (0-1) via 2nd round knockout at C3Fights: Jam-n-Slam 2. This fight came just a week after Finney beat Marissa Caldwell (0-1). also by knockout.
UPCOMING FIGHTS
As mentioned above, Roxanne Modafferi (13-4) will be taking on Marloes Coenen (16-3) at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers.
Zoila Frausto (3-0) appears to be a promising new prospect, having scored three decision wins in February, June and July. She will be taking on Elisha "Knuckles" Helsper at Strikeforce CS 4. Helsper, who is making her professional debut, trains at Lion's Den Team Idaho. Her amateur record is 6-1, with a notable win versus Jennifer "Rose" Tate (5-1 pro) and her loss coming to Lisa Ward (12-5 pro) (though she has also defeated Ward by unanimous decision).
Freestyle Cage Fighting is featuring two female fights. Malissa Sherwood (2-1) is taking on Kelmy Jasso (0-1). And Christian Bedwell will be making her professional debut against Ladies of Pain "Powerhouse" Amanda Lucas (yes, that's George's daughter). (Although Sherdog lists Lucas as 0-1, her Australian fight was actually an amateur bout and this is also her pro debut.)
Ireland's Aisling Daly (8-0) is fighting Finland's Maiju Kulaja (1-0) at Cage of Honour. I'd love to see Ais the Bash take on a tougher opponent, but for her finding a fight is certainly an issue.
Two Texas tough girls, Anita Rodriguez (3-1) and Jennifer Scott (1-0), will be scrapping at Legacy Fighting Championship.
Hopefully all six of these fights will take place. Come back next week for the results! Yael Grauer at www.thesavagescience.com See news from last week Here
