Aikido History
Morihei Ueshiba developed Aikido between the 1920’s and the 1930’s by putting together bits and pieces of older martial arts forms that he had studied. Ueshiba studied directly under Takeda Sokaku who is considered the “reviver” of the art of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. Aikido is said to have its main influence from this art.
Aikido Info
The word Aikido means "the Way of unifying life energy” or "the Way of harmonious spirit". Ueshiba wanted to develop an art that could be utilitzed to protect oneself while at the same time not injuring their adversary.
Aikido Techniques
Aikido makes use of throws and joint locks to counter attackers. By harmonizing with the motion of the attacker, the defender is able to redirect the attackers’ energy while not directly opposing it, reducing the amount of effort that is required. While Aikido techniques are most often used in cases of an attack, the strikes are similar in motion to cuts from a sword or other objects, which suggest that at one time it was used for during war.
