Judo History
The founder of the world renowned Judo Institute in Tokyo, Kano Jigoro, also created Kodokan Judo in 1882. In his youth Jigoro mastered many styles of Jujutsu including Kito-Ryu and Tenjin Shinyo-ryu. He then went on to establish his own system. The Judo institute to this day remains internationally respected.
General Judo Info
The word Judo means “gentle” or “yielding” way. Judo emphasizes the use of balance and leverage. Women’s Judo is less about brute strength and more about skill, technique and timing. Judo classes will coach women to give way to their opponent rather than conquer him.
Judo Techniques
Women’s Judo involves grappling , employing control holds, arm locks, chocking and pins but is most well-known for its extrodinary throws. Additional techniques incorporate striking and self defense. Some weapons are used ocassionally in Judo katas.
