‘Wrestling’ is the oldest word that is still used in the English language to refer to hand to hand combat. Wrestling can be defined as a hand-to-hand contest that pits two people against one another as they attempt to subdue or unbalance their opponent. With the popularity of MMA, wrestling has achieved much respect amongst fighters. In early MMA bouts fighters from strike-oriented styles such as karate and kickboxing were defeated by wrestlers. Guys like well-known former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture and current - competitor Dan Henderson participated in college wrestling before starting their MMA careers.

Wrestling History

Although some say the date may be legendary, 2697 B.C. is said to be the year the Yellow Emperor used wrestling to battle against the rebel Chih Yiu and his army. With a reported history of over 4,000 years, the Chinese wrestling style Shuai Jiao is arguably the most ancient Chinese martial art. The combatants were said to have worn horned helmets during these matches. While using a primitive form of grappling the horns were used to gore the opponent. The style was originally named Jiao Ti (butting with horns). Gradually over hundreds of years hands and arms would come to replace the horns. The technique in the art became stronger and the name eventually was changed to Shuai Jiao.

Women's Wrestling Techniques

womens wrestling Stand–up grappling may be emplyed for both offense and defense when used along with striking. It is used for preventing the opponent from gaining sufficient distance for effective strikes and for bringing the opponent close enough to execute knee strikes as in Muay Thai. Stand-up grappling usually centers on the ability to successfully take-down an opponent or employ a type of strategic throw. Ground Grappling is often used in order to achieve and maintain dominant positions. Ground grappling allows the grappler in the offensive more options such obtaining a pin or hold-down to domineer or tire the opponent. The defensive grappler, bottom grappler, may use a sweep or reversal to flee her situation. I situations where guards are used the bottom grappler may submit in order to conclude the fight.
