An interview with Marloes Coenen
Marloes Coenen

Marloes Coenen is ranked #2 in the 145 pound division and is now moving back to her natural weight of 135.  To say that she would be a challenge to any of the women in Strikeforce’s 135 pound division would be an understatement.

Strikeforce Challengers 10 on August 13th in Phoenix, Arizona. Will decide who will face Dutch martial artist Marloes Coenen.  Coenen's last fight was a loss to Cyborg at Strikeforce Miami, and before that she defeated Roxanne Modafferi with an armbar in just over a minute of the first round.

If Marloes wins this next fight she will face Sarah Kaufman who holds the title in the 135 division.  Here is an interview with Marloes about the upcoming fights and about the rest of her life.

Bellator 27 Preview and Predictions
by Don "The Don of MMA" Livingston

Bellator 27

Bellator 27 will come to us live from the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, TX and feature the first title defense for Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Soto as he takes on Season two tournament winner Joe Warren. The card also features three quarter-final bouts in the season three bantamweight tournament.

Let’s take a look at the match-ups and predict the winners.

BELLATOR FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:

Champion Joe “The Hammer” Soto (9-0) vs. Challenger Joe Warren (5-1):  Soto comes in as a highly underrated champion after capturing the title with three wins in the season one tournament.  In his last bout Soto defeated Diego Saraiva via stoppage due to a cut at Bellator 19 in May.  That bout was a non-title tilt so this will be the first defense of the strap for Soto boasts four wins by submission and four by (T)KO among his nine victories.  Warren is a decorated wrestler who has made a big splash on the MMA front with his high level skills and brash talk about opponents. After a highly touted and successful run in Japan, Warren returned to the U.S. and won the season two featherweight tourney by with a split decision victory over Patricio “Pitbull” Freire in a highly competitive bout.

Many are counting Soto out in this bout but he has displayed a well rounded skill set that could create difficulty for Warren.  But the thought here is that Warren’s wrestling and top control will smother and wear down Soto throughout the early rounds and eventually allow Warren to stop an exhausted Soto very late in the fight.

Warren over Soto by TKO (ground and pound) in round 5.

BELLATOR SEASON 3 BANTAMWEIGHT TOURNAMENT QUARTER-FINALS:

Ulysses “Useless” Gomez (6-1) vs. Travis “The Hurricane” Reddinger (14-2):  Gomez makes his Bellator debut and comes in as the Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion after defeating Luis Gonzalez for the belt in May.  Gomez has scored five submissions in his six wins and trains under Marc Laimon at Cobra Kai.  Reddinger ironically has a “BELLATOR” tattoo across his midsection but had it before signing with the promotion. Reddinger trains at...

UFC 118 Main Card What Happened? What’s Next?
by Don "The Don of MMA" Livingston

UFC 118

The UFC made its first and hopefully last (that topic to be discussed in another rant later on) trip to Boston for UFC 118.  The card was headlined by a lightweight title rematch between Champion Frank (apparently no longer Frankie) Edgar and former title holder BJ Penn.  The co-main event featured UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture against long time boxing champion James Toney.

Surprisingly all of the bouts on the main card were quite one-sided as there were no dramatic finishes or remotely debatable decisions.  Let’s take a look at what went down at UFC 118 and what may be on tap for the participants from the main card.

UFC Lightweight Championship

Champion Frank Edgar vs. Challenger BJ Penn:

What Happened?  The rematch was supposed to be different than the first fight but the only change from the first fight was that Edgar clearly dominated this fight and the decision was never in question.  Edgar used his superior footwork along with strong wrestling and quick hands to frustrate Penn early and often.  Edgar proved even more elusive this time as he never allowed Penn to let his hands go. Penn appeared to be a beaten fighter mentally as early as the second round and was not able to mount much of an offensive attack until scoring a takedown in round four.  But once again Edgar frustrated Penn by spending very little time on his back before being able to scramble to his feet.  In the end, Edgar won in a shutout as all three judges gave every round to Edgar.

What’s Next?
For Edgar: another rematch, this one with undefeated top contender Gray Maynard who is the only man to defeat Edgar.
For Penn: I have a feeling that The Prodigy may just retire.  His heart didn’t seem to be in a fight where he had plenty of reasons to be motivated. If Penn does continue a match-up with Takanori Gomi would make sense. It would get the hardcore MMA fans excited for a rematch of their 2003 bout won by Penn and it would see which declining star might make a return to the title picture.
